The hard and heavy fact of the matter is that if you have an actual mole removed, it’s going to leave a mole removal scar no matter what procedure you use to have it done. True moles, also known as intradermal nevi, have a root that must be removed to ensure that the mole won’t recur. In order to get rid of the mole permanently, no matter whether you opt to have it surgically removed or taken off by laser, there’s going to be a scar. Knowing this, you basically have two choices: you can just go ahead and leave the mole where it is, or you can opt to have it surgically removed and deal with the resulting scar after your face heals.
This probably wasn’t the information you wanted to hear. After all, if you read certain websites you can get the idea that laser mole removal won’t leave a scar. Surgical scars in which the wound is stitched following the removal will most likely result in the least visible scars. These scars usually fade to a white line. If you have a mole excised and cauterized, you’ll probably end up with a white circle where the mole used to be. Of course, these white places are going to darken a lot if they’re exposed to the sun, so make sure you keep them covered with a sunscreen that has at least an SPF 15 any time you go out into the sun.
There are cosmetic skin-resurfacing procedures you can have done to reduce the appearance of the scar. These procedures are best done by a plastic surgeon who can assess your scar and then recommend the optimum method of resurfacing the area. Skin resurfacing can be done by dermabrasion, laser skin resurfacing, or chemical peels. All of these procedures remove the external layers of the skin to allow fresher, more radiant skin to appear.
If you decide to use dermabrasion to eradicate your scar, the doctor will use a small, spinning wheel covered which a substance similar to sandpaper which will abrade the skin to remove its upper layers. This method is a good choice for use on facial scars and is often performed on the cheeks or on the entire face. Using dermabrasion usually allows the skin to blend in with the rest of the face as far as pigmentation is concerned so that it will be barely visible.
If you choose to have laser skin resurfacing done in order to minimize your mole removal scar, a CO2 laser will be used to vaporize the top layers of skin. Never have anyone who isn’t specifically trained in the use of laser equipment do any type of resurfacing on your face. A trained plastic surgeon will know how much energy is being emitted by the laser and how deeply the beam is penetrating into your skin. If you trust your face to a technician who has not been properly trained in laser skin resurfacing, the final results may not turn out the way you want them to.
Chemical peels are done by applying a chemical solution to the skin. Depending on the type and strength of the chemicals that are used, this procedure can be done right in the doctor’s office without the use of any anesthesia. The only thing you should feel is a tingling of your skin as the solution is applied. You’ll be able to drive yourself home immediately following the procedure. You may need to have several chemical peel treatments in order to get rid of your mole removal scar, however.
